Miami had previously been riddled with sweet and sour undergrad memories for me: getting a flat tire and being stuck in the middle of Hinesville, GA while en route to the city, day-drinking on the beach that turned into drunken turn up Spring Break nights, and of course sharing a hotel room (with one queen sized bed) with 6 of my closest friends.
Seeing as I’m making conscious efforts to transition into proper adulthood, I decided to try my hand at Miami again; but this time I’d follow Vanessa’s city guide, fly instead of drive, and steer clear of Wet Willies.
Well…two out of three isn’t bad, right? At the very last minute, my friend Denise and I decided to thug it out and drive the treacherous 10 hours it would take from Atlanta, which wasn’t all that bad. Turns out, the drive isn’t as horrible when you don’t have to factor in a tow truck and the fear of being kidnapped while stranded in a seemingly deserted small town.
Upon arrival in Miami at 5am, however, we discovered that the apartment we booked via Airbnb turned out to be in a sketchy part of town with an assortment of prostitutes anxiously trying to catch cabs out on the street. Umm, no thanks. I’m all about going with the flow and seeking adventure, but this one was simply not headed in the right direction. Denise’s parents ended up saving the day by connecting us with a local family friend who lent us his luxe ocean front condo on Biscayne Bay for the weekend (shout out to Anthony and Mr. & Mrs. Anderson, you’re the real MVP’s) free of charge. Talk about a come up!
After our minor debacle, the rest of the trip was pretty drama-free. I got a chance to meet and grab brunch with the ever lovely Vanessa, who was also kind enough to show me around the Wynwood Art District. Per her recommendation, I spent my 4th of July sipping passion fruit mojitos poolside at The Mondrian South Beach; which is truly the most stunning boutique hotel I have ever been to. The entire atmosphere was very much everything you'd envision Miami to be: youthful, upbeat, sexy, and on trend. Another of my best girlfriends from New York was also in town, so it was great to just catch up and relax with her.
Overall our road trip turned out to be quite a relaxing one. While I believe I accomplished my goal of doing Miami in a much more tasteful way than year's past, I still managed to indulge in one drunken night at Cameo and arrive back in Atlanta at 6am just in time to be at work at 9am.
Baby steps into adulthood I guess.
