Before their trip, Kate Ballis and her fiancé Tom Blachford took Spanish lessons for 6 months before they left and put a post out to well-travelled friends on Facebook, asking for tips on Guatemala. Once  in Guatemala they had no idea how long they would spend in each place, or where they would stay.   Meeting locals in Antigua, Flores and Lake Atitlan enriched their experience significantly.
