3 CITIES TO VISIT IN SENEGAL (OUTSIDE OF DAKAR)

Dakar is the capital of Senegal and one of the most popular cities in West Africa. And while I highly recommend exploring the city and making the most of the many incredible experiences to be had to first time visitors, it’s important to note that there are some equally (if not more) dynamic cities in other parts of Senegal that I would also highly recommend. Here are 3 of my favorites.

    1. Explore the Petite Côte (Little Coast): Just an hour’s drive outside of Dakar, this areas stretches for about about 94 miles and is considered to have some of the best beaches in Senegal. I would recommend you visit as part of an overnight or weekend trip to get the most of the experience. Saly, to take a boat tour in the Lagune du Somone, or lounge on the much more quiet beaches in Toubab Dialo.

    2. Siné-Saloum: About 3 and a half hours away from Dakar, the Siné-Saloum Delta is a river that flows into the Atlantic ocean and is filled with picturesque mangrove swamps, dunes, and lagoons. Part of it has been named a UNESCO world heritage heritage sight, and along with it is a national park. I was particularly keen on Palmarin, which is a coastal village near Siné-Saloum Delta and has a plethora of massive baobabs spread out as far as the eye can see. You’ll need at least 2 nights to make the most of the experience.

    3. Saint Louis: Rich in history and culture, Saint-Louis (N’dar in Wolof) carries strong remnants of past colonial times and once served as the French colonial capital of West Africa and city capital of Senegal. The Saint Louis Office of Tourism offers a tour of the Colonial Town for only 10000 CFA or you have the option to wander endlessly through its narrow, provincial streets, and take in it’s brightly colored colonial-era buildings. Be sure to read my detailed guide on how to experience the city here.
