PARADISE FOUND IN MAURITIUS WITH THE FOUR SEASONS

by Lee Litumbe in My Travels

Mauritius had always been one of those distant African countries with an exotic sounding name that always made me dream. I’ve been traveling throughout Africa for the past two and a half years, and it still feels surreal to get to explore new countries I never thought I’d have the chance to. Why, you ask?

Tiny, tropical island surrounded by the Indian Ocean - check.

Pristine white sand beaches, deep lagoons, and world class diving - check.

An UNDERWATER waterfall (seriously…what?!) - check.

And while it is known for being a luxe destination (especially for honeymooners), the rich history and culture is something I was particularly intrigued by. The soul of the island is easily felt and seen through the dynamic mix of cultural heritage (primarily African and Asian), resulting in French, English, Creole, and other traditional languages being spoken. So when my partner and I got the opportunity to visit and stay at Four Seasons Resort Mauritius at Anahita, we didn’t even think twice. Located on the east coast of the island, lapped by turquoise waters perfect for water sports, the relaxing Resort is filled with lush greenery and dramatic views everywhere you turn. While each stylish villa and residence features its own private garden and pool (just like the home for the Resort’s resident giant tortoises), something else that stood out were the incredible efforts made to preserve and protect the environment.

A FEW THINGS WE DID

Bike Riding: Because the property is expansive, we were provided with complimentary bicycles for the duration of our stay to explore all 64 acres of tropical gardens at our own pace. There was also the option of being driven around by golf cart, but this was a lot more fun and intimate when we just wanted to head out and do things on our own.

Private Cooking Class: You guys know by now that I’m all about the culture, so it was pretty cool to learn how to make some traditional cuisine using ingredients local and unique to the island. It was very interesting to see how similar some of the recipes (lots of curry!) and try new things like palm hearts; which i’d never tasted or cooked with before.

A FEW THINGS WE DID CONT’D

Snorkeling with Marine Biologists: Snorkeling and diving is definitely my kind of activity, and I can spend hours down below discovering as much as possible. What made this particular experience so unique, though, was getting to learn about the health and importance of the coral directly from marine biologists. Before getting into the Ocean, they shared about the efforts being made to not only prevent harm to the ocean but how they are growing new coral farms to restore what had previously been damaged through overfishing and even worse, dynamite fishing.

Private Beach Picnic on Île au Cerf: Just a short complimentary 5-10 minute boat ride away from the Resort is this most pristine private beach. What a treat it was to spend a few hours (all alone!) here and take in the views and the breeze.

Overall, my time at Four Seasons Resort Mauritius at Anahita was one that will not soon leave my memory. The food, the culture, the experiences, and definitely the staff left such a strong impression that I am already scheming on how to get back. But don’t take my word for it, get out there and see for yourself. You’re sure to have your mind blown!

Disclaimer: I was invited as a guest of The Four Seasons for my trip - though all opinions, photography, and words remain my own.
